Sleep and the art of speeling

Yup, speeling... that's the sort of mistakes I've been making all morning as these crazy broken sleep patterns continue to plague me.

Over the past 5 or so days, my body has developed this uncanny knack of waking up at 5:30 am... on the dot! I'm seriously beginning to wonder if there's not an alarm going off that I don't know about. Normally this wouldn't be too big a deal, but I've never really been the greatest at sleeping and lately my slumber has been more broken, more interrupted. Crazy vivid dreams (while entertaining) have also had me waking up 2 or 3 times a night. The real puzzling thing is, I can't think of why this has happened all of a sudden.

But that all leaves me in my current state, powered by Redbull and the stimulation of the 160mg of caffeine it contains. Now I've never been drunk, but I assume this must be a little like when you've had a few drinks the the alcohol begins to impair your cognitive functions. I'm clumsier than normal, dropping things, losing my train of thought, and just generally making poor decisions. If that is indeed like being a little drunk, then it continues to baffle me as to why people do get themselves in this state on purpose?!?

But enough of my sleep deprivation, it's Tuesday (wait it is Tues??... yeah it's Tuesday) and I've got another opportunity penciled in this weekend to photograph another good friend. Most likely an outdoor situation this time, so balancing light will be the key to getting some good shots. I have a few ideas, but the most important thing will be to take a couple of simple easy shots first. Bank those so I know I've got something good, then we can start to play with the lighting. You may have the most amazing shot planned to the smallest detail, but it always pays to bank a couple of simple portraits just in case things do go wrong.

But now as I look ahead to this weekend, and think about the art of planning a shoot, it occurs to me that one of, if not the most important thing you can do in preparation for a photoshoot...  is get a good nights sleep.
